Bob Friend was a workhorse on the mound for the Pittsburgh Pirates — a four-time All-Star and the first pitcher in MLB history to lead the league in ERA while playing for a last-place team. Known for his durability and control, Friend was a key figure in the Pirates’ rotation throughout the 1950s and early '60s.
