Welcome to Sports Wax 100 — our brand-new short-form series where we bring you a moment from this day in sports history … in 100 seconds or less.
This week’s debut episode takes us back to March 28, 1990, when Michael Jordan reminded everyone (especially the Cleveland Cavaliers) exactly who he was.
Here’s where you can listen to the first episode:
Here's more on this incredible performance, which took place 35 years ago today.
One Year After 'The Shot,' Jordan Did it Again — Only Bigger
On May 7, 1989, Michael Jordan crushed Cleveland fans with his iconic game-winner over Craig Ehlo — "The Shot" that became a defining moment in his career. I mean, it's even in the famous Be Like Mike Gatorade commercial:
Less than a year later, on March 28, 1990, he came back to Cleveland and turned in the most dominant performance of his life.
Jordan’s stat line? Absurd:
-
69 points (a career high)
-
18 rebounds
-
6 assists
-
4 steals
-
An overtime win
It was one of the greatest single-game performances in NBA history — the kind of game that still gives fans chills when.
The Bulls would go on to reach the Eastern Conference Finals later that season, falling in seven games to the eventual champion Detroit Pistons. Incredibly, it would be the last full season of Jordan’s prime that didn’t end with a championship.
Why This Episode Kicks Off the Series
We couldn’t think of a better way to launch Sports Wax 100 than with an all-time performance from the greatest to ever do it. Jordan’s 69-point masterpiece is a reminder of just how unstoppable he was — and why his legacy is still alive and thriving.
